Within Without

ONE THE ESPLANADE

“The Australian landscape is a place of harsh but rejuvenating fires with burnt and bleached timber ever-present, as are the new green shoots following such fires. I knew this image of energy and harsh experience would be the starting point for the artwork

Within, Without tries to touch on  black and white relations in this place. My conversations with cultural advisor Sandra Hill preceding this commission were seminal in understanding the need for the artwork to speak of endurance and resilience. I felt the idea of differing cultures could be made visual through the metaphor of burnt and bleached timber, juxtaposed but finding some balance. The artwork is in a sense made up of forms that have undergone harsh experiences evidenced on their surfaces.
